A week of Anniversaries

Forever the dates that occur this week are engrained in my heart and soul.  For both good, sad, and a little in between.

First the good...

Eight years ago was our wedding and while that doesn't seem that long ago we've managed to cram quiet a bit in there.  2 houses, 2.5 kids, and tons of trips fill my memories.  Probably like most brides, I tried to live in the moment of that day but it still is a bit of a blur to me which is funny considering I spent more hours planning it and fretting over font sizes than I'd like to admit.  We got married just on the cusp of digital photography too so our pictures are good, but not the amazing quality I've seen to day of wedding or have been lucky enough to capture of my minions.

Unfortunately, on our actual anniversary date this year we were both cursed by the stomach flu, but hey I'll take losing 6 pounds in a weekend as a bonus present (ps--they've made their way back).  We're planning on heading out for an overnight trip this weekend sans kids.  I wish we could squeeze in more time and to be honest I don't see too much of a babymoon happening for us this time around, but it will be nice to just enjoy each other in a different setting.

Then the sad...

This week last year was the last I spent with my mom before she passed away.  It wasn't unexpected, but it was definitely even more of a blur of week than the week of my wedding.  It was the culmination of a pretty stressful six months that then continued on for about another three, but today I am in a much better place.  My grieving has gotten better each day and month just as I know she'd wish it would for me.  I do wish I could reminisce about her with my brother more, but that's just another thing this year I'm learning that I can't change.

I feel bad sometimes, as if she is out of sight, out of mind, but my heart knows better than that.  I was fearing that I'd be all sorts of messed up with baggage from my childhood that was left unresolved and that hasn't been the case thankfully. I do think of her often and probably channel her more often now too.  I'm just so thankful she isn't suffering anymore and that I finally was able to get those last weeks images out of my dreams when I sleep.

The in between...

This is just a popular week overall for friends around me; celebrations of anniversaries for them (all the cool people get married in fall you know), babies born, birthdays, and deaths of their own loved ones seem to occur this same week.  Just a reminder to myself that you will experience the highest of highs and lowest of lows at any given moment and sometimes the Gods don't pay attention to the calendar as to when things happen.

Halloween!

I realized I never updated my Halloween Pictures.

My little guys were just adorable this Halloween and boy did they haul in the treats.

Alex dressed up as Spider Man for trick-or-treating at preschool and had a great time going around the classrooms getting goodies.

For actual trick-or-treating, Alex went as a fireman and Cameron went as his faithful companion, a dalmatian.  I have to pat myself on the back for decorating the wagon up as a fire truck.

I liked getting into the spirit of the season.  It is such a let down when the trick-or-treaters that do come around have no costumes or manners :(

Good thing I got this up before the next holiday!

Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken

I love spicy Buffalo Chicken and this tasty recipe was a snap to make.

I found this on Pinterest originating from here but below is my own variation and recommendations.

Ingredients:
3-4 Chicken Breasts (I used fresh)
Franks Red Hot Sauce (regular or buffalo)
Dried Ranch Dressing Mix
2-3 tbsp. butter

Preparation
Place Chicken in Slow Cooker
Pour approx. 1/2 bottle of sauce on top
1/4 to 1/2 of the dressing mix.  (I used 1/2 and found it to be too salty)

Cook on low for 6-8 hours

Shred up the chicken, add more sauce or a little water if necessary, but the chicken will shred up perfectly.
Put butter on top for about 15 more minutes, stir and then serve

**I think adding a little cream cheese to this recipe also might be a nice addition, but I'd melt that in the slow cooker prior to adding the chicken**

This is so yummy and very versatile to serve with anything.  I especially love it mixed in a cool salad with a little ranch dressing.  With the Super Bowl coming up too this would be a…

Pirate Party Game - Ring Toss

Why didn't I think of this?!  I came across this from Hostess with the Mostess site, my go-to party planning inspiration blog.  What an awesome game and pretty inexpensive if you were a savvy shopper and picked up the pirate hooks for $1 at Target along with some swim diving rings also in the $1 spot.

This would've been perfect for Alex's 4th Birthday Pirate Party where we played "Pin the Hook on Captain Hook".
